Transfer of Credit

This information will help you understand the way
American University evaluates college-level work done at two-year institutions for use towards AU degree programs. You may search a database of courses from two-year institutions that have been matched with similar courses offered at American University.  While this list does not include all transferable courses, it will give you a general idea of how your course work will transfer. If you have specific questions regarding how other courses will transfer to American University, please contact Admissions at afa@american.edu.

American University accepts transfer credit for courses taken at both two- and four-year collegiate institutions that were, at the time the courses were taken, regionally accredited or recognized candidates for accreditation.  Grades of "C" or better are accepted from regionally accredited, AG-rated institutions. Grades of "B" or better are generally accepted from provisionally accredited, AP-rated institutions. These courses must also be appropriate for academic credit toward an undergraduate degree program at AU.  Most successful applicants find that they transfer a majority of their coursework completed prior to enrolling at American University.

Admissions evaluates official documents that show previous college-level work completed to determine how much of that work can be transferred to American University. Individual AU teaching units (schools, colleges, and/or departments within the university) determine how this credit will apply to specific degree programs, university requirements, and American University’s General Education program. (See below.)

Grades and quality points earned in courses accepted for transfer will not be included in the grade point average to be maintained at
American University, but the credits will count toward the total number required for graduation.

A maximum of 75 credit hours may be transferred toward a bachelor's degree, with no more than 60 credit hours from two-year collegiate institutions.

A maximum of 30 credit hours may be granted for a combination of relevant work completed in college-level non-degree, correspondence or extension courses completed at an accredited institution provided the course work is recognized by that institution for credit toward a degree, and is appropriate for academic credit as determined by AU Admissions after consultation with the school, college, or academic department in which the student enrolls.

University Requirements for Bachelor's Degrees

College Writing and English Competency Requirement

All students must be able to write with a level of mastery equal to the demands of college course work. In addition, students need to acquire the critical reading skills necessary in all their courses.

Students who transfer to
American University may satisfy this requirement in one of the following ways:

  • Transferring 6 credit hours of acceptable composition credit from another institution and passing American University's English Competency Examination.
  • Transferring 3 credit hours of acceptable composition credit from another institution and passing the first course in the college writing sequence with a 'C' or better or taking the second course in the college writing sequence and passing American University's English Competency Examination.

University Mathematics Requirement

American University requires that all students demonstrate skills in college-level mathematics and quantitative reasoning. Students must enroll in an appropriate mathematics course in the first or second semester of full-time study, or satisfy the requirement through examination, as specified in the American University catalog.

Transfer students and graduates of secondary schools outside the United States may satisfy the University Mathematics Requirement in one of the following ways:

  • Transferring a course titled 'Calculus I' or a mathematics course for which 'Calculus I' is a prerequisite, with a grade of B or better, from an AG-rated collegiate institution, taken prior to enrolling at American University.
  • Passing an examination given by the Department of Mathematics and Statistics demonstrating competence equivalent to MATH-15x Finite Mathematics, MATH-211 Applied Calculus I or STAT-202 Basic Statistics. Only one of these exams may be taken and that exam may be taken only once, during the student's first semester. Eligible students should contact the Department of Mathematics and Statistics for more information about the Mathematics and Statistics Equivalency Exam.
  • Passing MATH-15x Finite Mathematics, MATH-211 Applied Calculus I, STAT-202 Basic Statistics, or a course that lists one of these courses as a prerequisite after beginning their study at American University.

General Education

Transfer students may satisfy part or all of their General Education requirements (one foundation and one second-level course sequence in each of five curricular areas) through transfer courses completed before the student's initial enrollment at AU. Through the evaluation of equivalent courses taken at another institution and with the approval of a student's dean, transfer credit may fulfill the entire 10-course requirement. In most cases, students supplement transfer credit with General Education courses taken at the university to meet this requirement.  Students may not transfer in more than two courses in the same discipline area to satisfy General Education requirements.

Please consult the American University Catalog for additional information regarding the transfer of credits and General Education regulations.

Transfer Articulation Information

If your school is listed in the drop-down menu below, you can see a select number of courses that have already been “articulated” (e.g., matched up) with equivalent courses at American University. It is important to note that all final transfer decisions will be made by Admissions  in conjunction with the appropriate academic unit.
